Scarves in Autumn
Can someone please explain to me why oh why people in London insist on wearing scarves in the autumn, when it’s no less than 20 °C ? I mean honestly, has style over content got to such a degree that people are so overly keen to wear a god damn scarf? The straw that broke the camel’s back was seeing this woman on the tube today. Wearing a sleeveless jumper, and a massive fucking scarf? I mean honestly what the hell is that all about? My arms get really warm, however I’ve got chronic neck cold spells?
I noticed this a few weeks ago (when it was even warmer) and just laughed it up, now it’s just annoying. So I’m thinking is this a London thing (because there are some seriously pretentious twats running around here or has this scarf phenomenon leaked to other parts of the world? What the hell are they going to be wearing when it’s actually cold, bear skins?
I think it is just you pretensious Londoners, I haven’t seen it here at all.
Ah, pretensious London how I miss you…

Here in Singapore where it’s sunny and humid all year around, these kids who’re into ‘hiphop’ even wear the full gear, jumpers and jackets. A walking sauna if you’d ask me.

My sister is very much into the scarf thing. I’ve no idea where she caught the bug though as the idea of a scarf as a fashion accessory as opposed to being an article to keep out the drafts when you live in Chicago or Buffalo is not common in the States. I’d always assumed the “wear a scarf all the damn time” thing was purely European.
Incidentally, I live in Virginia, the South. It’s cold for maybe three months of the year. And so, the invention of the useless scarf. There is no way it will keep you warm in any clime but, it looks pretty. I think. That’s what my sister tells me anyway.

It’s not just London…Cheltenham is also *very* pretentious. Scarves are bad…what’s worse?…Burberry Scarves!

No, it’s a Swansea thing too. I even succumbed the other week, but decided it was stupid and put it away for another month

What’s even more confusing is seeing people in Miami, Florida wearing scarves in December. Mind you, this is winter, but the temperature is 70F.

For womens fashion I think it all started with the dreaded pashmina craze that conditioned everyone that wraps were a fashion item.
Wait until it gets cold enough for beanie hats. My gf thinks that the ski bunny look is the positive height of fashion so deploys various bright offerings at the drop of a hat (excuse the pun)!

heyyyy… the price of looking good can sometimes be uncomfortable but its worth it!
j/k
I’ve worn only 3 scarves this Fall… but I live in Chicago and we’ve had a few really cold nights already

Pretentious twats in Oxford too - there’s not been a month this year when the scarves haven’t been out.

It’s not just a London thing, same thing happens here in Copenhagen. Makes me laugh as well, then again I was wearing shorts and t-shirts until recently :)

Don’t get me wrong I think the scarf is a fantastic accessory, when the time is right for it, currently in London, I don’t think that’s the case, so everyone who’s wearing one, is doing so because they think it looks good. Hell I’ve seen people go out with just a shirt or t-shirt which is the other extreme (or they’re from up North).
I’d like to say that it’s mainly girls that wear the scarves, and therefore attribute it to the fact that they’re women and although they have higher thresholds for pain, they’re actually more sensetive to the cold, however I’ve seen guys wear them just as much as girls.
Adam - lol, all year round eh :), twats are everywhere :)

Hey, I do that! In fact, I’m wearing shorts and T-Shirt right now. Of course, I’ve just returned from a 5-aside football match:)
I’ve never understood the need for scarves. It rarely gets cold enough to make it worthwhile in London and when it does, it’s probably the least useful item of clothing.

You know what really get me going…
Large sunglasses. You know, the kind that take up half a girls face and make her look like some kind of overgrown housefly. They’re not at all stylish, or maybe I’m not at all stylish…

Wait till I write my post about how shoes make or break an outfit :), think I’m joking?

“[Women] have higher thresholds for pain.”
Recent research suggests this widely-accepted fact may not be true after all.
In any case, while I’d agree that it’s definately not scarf weather yet (being the mildest start to autumn for a good while), some people feel the cold more than others, so I can’t really agree with Phu about the usefulness of scarves; I was very happy to have mine, last winter, despite the comparative mildness of the weather.

Scarves are practically a university wardrobe staple. Term starts, and regardless of the weather everyone’s walking around campus with one wrapped around their neck or flung casually over their shoulders. I’ve come to the conclusion that scarves are purely a fashion accessory - I mean, how can a strip of wool really help to keep you warm?
That said, I’m guilty of being part of this trend. There’s a bright pink scarf knotted around my neck as a I type this, and it’s actually very warm in the library right now.

I personally think scarves are a great accessory, they keep your neck warm when you need them too and they are easy to hide away when you don’t need it. Alpaca scarves have to be my favorite, they are super soft and I just fell in love with the Alpaca’s when I was in South america they are so cute.

I’m totally into wearing a tight little scarf as an accessory, particularly with cap sleeve crop tops with low necklines. Worn with a pair of matching arm-warmers it also keeps you warm whilst looking cool by baring your arms and middle in the winter
